The Garden of the Gods

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings

When the Cliff Dwellings were built, they were controversial, and the project was later discontinued. It also caused rifts among archaeologists in the Southwest. Although it is reported that Edgar Lee Hewett approved of McClurg’s plan to reconstruct Manitou, he was not interested in legitimizing the project and had little regard for the Cliff Dwellings.

Admission to the Manitou Cliff Dwellings is not free. Adults pay $12 and children pay $7.50. Senior citizens pay $9. There are also discounted group rates for groups of 10 or more. Located in a scenic area, the Manitou Cliff Dwellings are worth a visit.

The town of Manitou Springs was once a health resort. During the 19th century, Manitou became a popular destination for vacationers. There were historic motels and Cliff Dwellings to explore. Today, the town has a new history museum and a variety of restaurants and shops. Its downtown district is five blocks in length.
